Sammi the pirate kitty.

Raven and I are playing pirate this week at #NipClub on twitter. #NipClub is where lots of anipals have fun and help animal charities. You can read more about Nipclub here and maybe you'll decide to join in the fun.

For this week's Pirate Battle our talented twitter friend @MizzBassie made a prosthetic hook to replace my missing paw. Doesn't it look great?

After I got my hook, I got to thinking that maybe I could have several attachments. This big hook is great for playing pirate and for snatching fish out of the lake or ocean. Even though my hook is light, it's not practical for things like climbing or taking care of business in the litter box. Maybe I could get a cat claw attachment for climbing & scratching and a little shovel attachment when I need to bury things in the litter box.

I do really well and I'm happy as a three-legged kitty, but it sure would be fun to pretend I have lots of paw attachments. My favorite one might be a big boxing glove to bonk Raven on the head!

Whoops! Four legs might be better than three.

Sammi was wriggling on her window perch enjoying the sun so I decided to go get the camera and take a video. Within a few seconds she wriggled off her perch. If she still had her missing front leg she may have been able to catch herself. But she wasn't hurt. She slid down about 2 feet and was up & running before I could get to her. I'm not sure which one of us was more shocked and upset. I suspect the "mom" took it harder than Sammi did.

A new birdie visited our yard

This birdie visited our yard yesterday. Mom  said it's a California Quail. We've heard that quail are tasty but we didn't want to eat him because he's so cute. And we couldn't have eaten him anyway because we aren't allowed out of the house and he's too fast for us to catch. Look at the big feathery plume on top of his head. It makes him look very proud and distinguished. I hope he comes back to amuse me. Maybe if mom puts some bird seed on the ground he will bring his family for a visit so I can see a mom quail and some little ones.

Sammi enjoys a day with mom working from home.

Mom was able to do her work from home today. I thought it only fair that after my full-day nap I should try to help her a bit.

My part done, I sat behind her and rubbed against the back of her chair. That wasn't as nice as being petted, so I sat some more and got bored.

Oops, sorry mom. I didn't mean to give you that look. I was yawning and you turned around and saw me with an unflattering snarl. Really, I'm bored and I was yawning.

Can we go in the living room and play now?

Kitty Face-plant

This is me, face down in my bed. I was perfectly comfortable but after taking this photo Mom made me turn my head so she was sure I could breathe. Silly Mom, I'm not going to suffocate myself in my bed. I was just trying to keep my nose warm.

A rare kitty-sisters moment

It isn't very often that Sammi and I will sleep near each other, but I was feeling a bit lonely today and came into the bedroom to be with Mom & Sammi. This is my bedroom and Sammi usually isn't in here, but mom was cleaning the closet and Sammi decided to investigate. After awhile she settled onto one of my blankets for a nap. I decided it was too lonely to be in the other room all by myself, so I carefully got on the bed so as not to disturb Sammi and snuggled on to my big pillow for a nap. Sammi gave me a few disapproving looks, but Mom was there to make sure she didn't try to chase me away. Mom was glad to see us napping together but she knew it was only happening because Dad is camping this weekend and we're feeling a bit out of sorts without him. Sammi will be back to requiring I stay 1 foot away from her when Dad gets home.

I'm scared of thunder

I think I'll be safe here in the closet until the thunder goes away. It's so loud and scary it makes me quiver. Mom & Dad didn't want me hiding under the bed so they opened the closet door for me so I could go in my special hiding spot. I feel safe between the shelves where nothing can get me from the sides or above.  Thunder please go away!

Dad can't resist my begging

I didn't get beer and BBQ potato chips last night, but tonight I got one of Raven's tasty dry food kibbles. I can stand upright on my strong hind legs and my missing front leg doesn't make any difference in my ability to balance.

A Mourning Dove visited today

A Mourning Dove visited our yard this morning. This friendly little creature sat on the fence while Raven chirped at it from the bedroom window. Sammi didn't take much interest. The dove sat for about 5 minutes before flying off to do whatever Mourning Doves do in the late morning. At least this visitor didn't bring mouse carnage like yesterday's Jay.

Playing with only three legs

I have plenty of fun even though I have only three legs. My favorite game is to leap & pounce on a wand toy that has mylar strips on the end. Mom wiggles the toy beneath a pile of tissue paper and over to a soft cat bed. I have a fondness for tissue paper and it's fun for me to pounce around on the paper to find the toy. The soft cat bed makes another perfect pouncing place. The bed supports my chest where my front leg used to be and I have a fantastic time pawing for the toy on top of the bed. Here's a video of me playing with my "razzle dazzle" toy. I have to expend a little more effort running & playing than a 4-legged cat, so mom always make sure I capture my toy and have a fun play session, She thinks I don't know she's "helping" me, but I'm missing a leg, not my hunting & predator skills.

Sammi likes getting her medicine

We give Sammi medicine every day for inflammatory bowel disease. The medicine is compounded by a pharmacy in Arizona and hers is fish flavored (there's a chicken flavor too). At first we were holding her head and squirting it in her mouth, but she quickly tired of that. She likes the taste of the medicine so we found we can slowly drip the medicine from the syringe and she'll lick it from the tip. She gets only 0.4 mL so it only takes a few seconds for her to drink it. I think she wishes there were more to lick up.

I have perfect paws (or paw)

What's this I hear about mom coveting our neighbor's paws? Isn't that breaking one of the Catmandments?

I have only one front paw, but it's perfect. It's pure white and 1-1/4 inches wide. Mom keeps my paws healthy by trimming and cleaning my claws (they get a little waxy).

I know mom loves me and my paws, so I'm not jealous of Tyler. And I agree that those giant paws of his are spectacular. If I could get a prosthetic paw, I might like a big paw with an extra toe like Tyler's. On second thought, I'd look funny with a gigantic paw on my slender body. I think I'll stay just the way I am.

Intruder cat, leave my birds alone!

Yesterday afternoon I was relaxing in my window perch watching two Mourning Doves in our front yard. It was about 6 p.m. and they were perched on a rock, probably enjoying the warmth and feeling a bit safer than sitting on the ground.

It was amusing entertainment that I could have enjoyed for much longer. But then, a black cat from up the street came by. This kitty comes by every day to investigate our yard. He meandered down our walkway and saw the doves.

He was curious about the birds, but he didn't try to catch them. As he approached the birds they saw him and flew away. He walked up and gave the rock a thorough sniff before wandering off. It's a good thing he didn't try to catch the birds, because mom would shoo him away if she saw him doing that.

Anyway, I thought it was rude of him to interrupt my evening entertainment. The yard is mine and I should have the chance to watch my visitors for as long as I want. He intruded on my birdwatching and I showed my agitation by quickly running to the other windows to try to see where the rude little beast wandered off to. I didn't find him, but I did see a big, black crow in the back yard.

This thing was actually a bit scary. It's big, noisy, and has a huge beak! He didn't spend long looking for bugs before he flew off. I'm not so sure I want to see him again. I prefer to watch the cute little songbirds or hummingbirds.

New respect for Scrub Jays

We posted yesterday about the Scrub Jay who comes to our yard to eat bugs from the lawn. Today we saw him fly by carrying a mouse! We nad ho idea they ate mice or were strong enough to fly with one. He stopped to rest on the power line behind our back yard. We felt a little bad for the mouse, but maybe jay has a lady jay and chicks at home to feed and a nest that can be lined with mouse fur.

Wildlife visitors are better than cat TV

We had some wild friends visit our yard today. We try to keep a wildlife-friendly back yard to attract birds, squirrels, and lizards. They are great entertainment for both humans and indoor cats.

The Scrub Jay likes to eat insects from our lawn. We don't spray for bugs so there are always plenty for him to eat.

The hummingbirds come to our feeder every day. This little girl ate while her mate sat in the tree an protected her. We use A-1 Best Hummingbird food. It doesn't have any food coloring so it's healthier for the birds.

And a furry little squirrel used our mushroom statue to take a break from looking for buried nuts. The neighbor leaves out peanuts and the squirrels come bury them in our yard because most of their yard is pool & concrete.

We hope your day was as entertaining as ours. We're glad it's spring and the wild animal friends are visiting the yard and entertaining us.

Turkey burger dinner treats

I made turkey burgers for our dinner and thought it would be fun to make mini-burgers for Sammi and Raven. Raven stared at her plate and patiently waited for something more familiar. Cooked turkey must not be enticing enough for her.

Sammi dives right in. She cleans her plate in about 15 seconds and looks up for more.

I gave Sammi only 1/4 of her burger so her tummy doesn't get upset. She had about 6 pea-sized pieces tonight and she'll be happy to get the rest of her turkey burger over the next few days.

Raven is happy when served her regular dinner of Wellness canned food (chicken).

Those are some big paws!

Sometimes I go next door to take care of the neighbor's cats, Tippy and Tyler. I like Tippy because she's a soft, sweet little girl. I like Tyler because he's Big and Furry. I call him Behemoth Kitty because he's 25 pounds of furry love. I also call him Rolling Thunder because of the thunderous noises when he runs around or jumps down from the back of the furniture.  He's surprisingly active and agile for a 25 pound cat.

What I really like about Tyler is his paws. They're extra jumbo sized to fit his body, plus he has extra toes! Both of his paws are 2-1/2 inches across. Imagine this big boy with his jumbo paws making biscuits on your lap.

Our sensitive kitty Raven

We know our Raven is a shy, sensitive girl. She often finds the quietest spot in the house to sleep in and gets nervous or hides when she hears loud noises.

We learned how shy Raven is during our attempt to adopt a third cat. Her sensitive nature has become more obvious as we watch her reactions to other cat noises. A few weeks ago she heard two cats having a midnight territorial dispute in one of the adjoining backyards. She ran from window to window trying to see where the yowling & hissing was coming from, then  hid under the bed. I guess if you can't see where the scary noises are coming from, you should hide from them. We coaxed her out, reassured her she was safe, and got her to snuggle in with us to go back to bed.

When I was watching this video about a cat coughing due to asthma, Raven was on my desk and seemed to get agitated by the sounds the cat was making. I thought maybe the cat sounded distressed to Raven and it made her nervous. Apparently, the nervewracking sounds don't have to be in "real life", but can be from internet videos.

This weekend I was watching the first episode of "My Cat From Hell" on Animal Planet. When Raven heard "Bear" hissing, she became nervous and started looking for someplace to hide. I muted the volume on the t.v. and reassured my little girl she was safe. I didn't watch the second part of the show with another hissing cat because I didn't want Raven to be upset.

I think I'll keep watching Cats 101  instead of this new series. Cats 101 has happy, meowing cats and doesn't upset Raven.
